Imagine being a child, just eight years old, stepping off a plane in a new country. Your parents, immigrants seeking a better life, look to you for guidance in this unfamiliar land. As you navigate the challenges of a different culture and language, you become the spokesperson for your family, shouldering responsibilities beyond your years. This is a story of immigration, a tale of growth, and a testament to the strength of those who seek independence and maturity in a new and unfamiliar world.
From a small town in Bangladesh, Tabassum set out on a journey that would mold her into a person defined by independence, responsibility, and maturity. Born into a first-generation immigrant family, Tabassum’s early years were marked by significant challenges as she navigated the complexities of a new country and shouldered responsibilities beyond her years. Tabassum’s story is one of resilience, shaped by her role as the oldest sibling in a family of triplets. Moving to a new country at the tender age of eight, Tabassum found herself thrust into a world where everything seemed foreign, and the path to fitting in was paved with obstacles. The responsibilities that came with being the oldest were not just familial duties; they were the building blocks of her character. “I became the spokesperson for my family. My parents relied on me to understand the paperwork, the language, everything. It was a lot for a kid, but I knew I had to figure it out,” Tabassum shared, a sense of determination evident in her voice. The challenges extended beyond paperwork and language barriers. Tabassum found herself on a lonely journey in her school life, where bullying caused emotional stress and cast shadows on her childhood. Determined not to burden her parents with her struggles, she bore the emotional weight alone. “I didn’t want to worry my parents, so I dealt with it on my own. It made me tougher, more resilient,” she explained, her voice momentarily carrying the unspoken challenges of her past.
Embracing her responsibilities also meant looking after her triplet brothers, a task that required her to be more than just a caring sister. As Tabassum reflects, “With all this responsibility from a young age, I sometimes felt that I didn’t have much of a childhood because I had no choice but to be more independent, responsible, and mature.” Her mother faced difficulties managing the trio on her own, prompting Tabassum to step in and help with the practical aspects of caregiving. This emotional burden was intensified by the lack of emotional support within her family. Tabassum shared, “My family never really made me feel comfortable enough to share anything with them because they never really tried to understand me or my problems. They often belittled my problems and gave them no importance, so I stopped trying to share anything with them or even look for emotional support from them.” These emotional and mental challenges have shaped Tabassum’s approach to self-reliance. The struggle to find emotional support within her family has made her hesitant to lean on others. Yet, it also shaped the resilience that has become an integral part of her character, as she learned to navigate emotional issues independently. In the midst of her challenges, Tabassum discovered her own strength. “My childhood experiences have helped me to be more independent. It has also taught me to have a more mature outlook on things” she shared, a glimpse of vulnerability evident behind her confident demeanor.
As Tabassum spoke, her bubbly nature and talkative spirit shone through. “I’ve always been a bit of an introvert, but when I’m comfortable, you can’t get me to stop talking,” she laughed, a reminder that behind the layers of independence, there was a person who found solace in connection. During her free time, Tabassum finds solace in watching shows, particularly anime and dramas. Her passion extends beyond personal interests; she has a fervent desire for success and aims to create a better lifestyle for herself and her family. “That thought itself drives me to do my best and stay motivated throughout the semester” she explains enthusiastically. Additionally, Tabassum has a passion for making others feel heard and valued, a commitment born from the absence of such understanding in her own life. Her experiences have instilled in her the belief in the importance of acknowledging and giving significance to the situations and problems of others.
Tabassum’s journey from a small town in Bangladesh to independence and maturity in a new country is a testament to resilience. As she pursues her major in psychology, she isn’t just on an academic path; she’s on a journey of self-discovery, continually building on the independence and maturity forged from her past.
